It has been 30 anniversary since the original Toy Story movie debuted, launching the animation giant as a major film company and bringing audiences to iconic characters like the cowboy doll (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now household names.
In 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, offering a glimpse into the storyline but keeping viewers curious how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.
In the teaser shows Bonnie — who inherited Andy's toys when he grew up — getting a latest toy, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She gets her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.
Theoretically, the frog-shaped tablet will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the toys seem to view it as a threat coming to replace them, which it probably is.
An element the teaser doesn't touch on is what Woody is back with his companions in the child's bedroom. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a new adventure with the shepherdess (the actress), traveling with a fair and assisting prize toys locate loving owners.
Surely, the filmmakers will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Witnessing him show up in the familiar setting without warning is a little strange, however. It also raises questions whether his partner will have come back with Woody. And what about Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves)?
Fortunately, some aspects are carrying over from the earlier movie. The final act Woody did before departing for his fresh path was hand over his symbol of authority to Jessie (Joan Cusack), leaving her in charge of the toy domain. In the teaser displays the insignia attached to her shirt.
Hopefully she is remains the driving force among the group.
Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
