European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has halted efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the case was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city prior to the holiday period, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy actions.
