Following 25 long years, no portion of the state is enduring drought conditions. This milestone follows difficult years marked by a lack of precipitation that worsened blaze threats and challenged its massive agricultural sector.
Thursday's report from the U.S. Drought Monitor showed that California in its entirety is clear of any level of drought. This development came after multiple significant storms that topped up major reservoirs like Shasta and Oroville far beyond their typical levels.
“For anyone 25 or under you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” remarked a weather expert.
The journey here involved powerful and fatal winter storms that pummeled the state in recent years, leading to widespread flooding, power outages, and tragic losses. While those storms helped ease the drought, they fell short of ending it.
As late as late December, pockets like the state's northeast corner were still classified as unusually parched. Substantial precipitation at the onset of 2026 eliminated those last vestiges of dryness.
However, hydrologists note that being out of drought does not mean having no water worries. Current readings of the mountain snow accumulation place it at approximately 70 percent of the typical level.
This mountain snow, which provides about a third of the state's water supply as it melts in the spring, is a key piece for long-term water security. Hydrology managers stress that it is too early to make predictions for the coming year.
“The trend we’re looking at right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” explained a California water official. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to improve by April 1st so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”
Although the monitor is entirely green, the focus now shifts to maintaining this precious water balance throughout the coming seasons.
