An individual earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was publicly declared, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the close of the month increased in the hours before Donald Trump declared on Saturday that Maduro had been seized.

A particular user, which registered on the site recently and took four positions, all on Venezuela, earned over $436K from a starting bet of $32.5K.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before News Break

Platform data shows that users put the odds of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of the prior Friday.

Yet the market's assessment had climbed to 11% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the first hours of the next day, indicating a sharp shift in positions just before the public announcement was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," stated an industry expert.

Several of other individuals also profited significant sums from predicting the capture.

Regulatory Scrutiny Grows

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation put forward on the start of the week would prevent government employees from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a market.

Industry Context

Prediction markets have grown significantly in recent years, with traders able to predict everything from sports to politics.

Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. However it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market industry.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits trading on insider information of any form."
